parenting attachment theory

parenting attachment theory
Is there a theory explaining why we tend to choose mates that are like our opposite-sex parent?

For my personality psychology class, our term project is to come up with a personality theory of our own. I’m thinking about modifying Bowlby’s attachment theory into making the parents’ relationship just as important as the child-parent relationship. I know there are exceptions to that and everything–I’ll get to those–but I just need to know if there is already a theory that covers that relationship. I haven’t found one on google that says what I want to say, but I figure I can use any help anyone can give me! Thank you!

people tend to go for what is familliar to them. Therefore, a male for example, would consciously/unconsciously see his mother’s manorisms and such, and would seek out a female with similar charicteristics because that is what he knows to be normal. I think this is an unconscious process…but it goes along with the theory that females get into abusive relationships with men b/c the females mother was also in an abusive relationship with the girls father…it’s what they’ve grown up with and what is comfortable/normal
